As the Savong School’s influence grew, the desire for more and more students from underprivileged backgrounds to attend the classes grew significantly. As a result we would transport dozens of students from a village in West Baray to and from the school in Bakong, a one-way trip that would take about 45 minutes. We soon realized this wasn’t a very cost-efficient, or time-efficient exercise.
So the decision was made to rent a big farmer’s house in the West Baray village (25 km from Siem Reap town) and setup a branch of the Savong School there, this way the local students could attend classes without needing to commute to the other side of town.
Through the generous support of Jonathan Kornberg from Hong Kong, the Baray School now provides free English classes to 110 students from the local villages. These classes are provided every afternoon from 2pm to 7pm, Monday to Friday.
